Kristen Jansen is our Head of Department Sport and oversees all of Sport at Stretton State College as well as the Sports Academy. She is also our Head Volleyball Coach. Kristen’s journey with volleyball began with her High School HPE teacher ‘actively encouraging’ her to try the sport one weekend. From there, she made the Capricornia Regional team and the 15 and Under Queensland team in the same year. Kristen moved from Mackay, where her family lived to Gladstone to attend the GSHS Volleyball School of Excellence in Year 12. That year she was named captain of the Queensland and Australian School Girls team and recruited to play in the USA.
Kristen spent four years playing on scholarship at Florida Community College at Jacksonville and the Univeristy of North Florida while studying a Bachelor of Arts in Education (Physical Education). Coming home from the United States, she has played and captained the Queensland Women’s team for many years starting in 2003. She also had the privilage of representing Australia in 2007 and 2008.
When asked, “why volleyball?” Kristen responded with, “Volleyball really is the ultimate team sport. There are no intercepts, there is no extra time, there is no buzzer beater or penalty goal. You have to rely on your team mates. You can’t do it without them, and they can’t do it without you. I love the unique comradery that is Volleyball”.
Kristen has coached regionally for Darling Downs and Met West for almost 15 years. This year she will coach the 19 Years Queensland Girls Volleyball team that travels to Malaysia and Singapore before again leading Stretton’s AVSC contigency to Melbourne in December.
