Damien Tobin is the head coach of Boys Football on the Illaweena Campus at Stretton State College. Born into a Football mad family with Liverpudlian blood flowing through his veins, there was never any doubt what sport he would give his life too. From the time of his very first steps until today, a Football has never been far from his feet. Taking to the field for his local club at the tender age of five, his strength and presence in the heart of the defence soon became apparent. He captained sides to premierships and grand final wins throughout his teenage years and won multiple player of the year awards at both club and school level.
A graduate of Cavendish Road State High Schools highly successful Football Excellence program, Met East representative and National Schools Futsal Championship winner, Damien’s playing career was crippled by a chronic Hamstring injury first sustained whilst playing for Lions FC in 2004. Whilst continuing to play for the next 5 years, a shift to coaching seemed inevitable, with successful stints coaching youth Futsal teams out of the Acacia Ridge centre. During this time, Damien began working with PCYC & “Active After Schools” as a Football development coach and delivered skills sessions to hundreds of young budding footballers. A move to the UK after completing his first degree saw 4 years spent in various coaching and leadership positions within a large sports and entertainment company.
After returning to Australia and whilst completing his teaching qualifications, Damien volunteered at Stretton State College one day a week and helped with the newly established Football Academy when he could. After graduating and taking up a position at Stretton State College, he soon after took over the mantle as Football Academy Director and oversaw a complete overhaul of the program both on and off the field. After adding further qualifications to his repertoire and a reshuffle of responsibilities at the beginning of 2018, Damien assumed the role of Head Coach for Boys Football on the Illaweena Campus and has had immediate success with 2 district premierships during the 2018 Winter season.
Throughout his playing and coaching career, Damien’s greatest strength has been his natural ability to lead. These qualities naturally bleed into his professional life as well, where he looks to constantly improve himself and those around him by sharing his knowledge and passion for his pursuits. Damien believes that a successful team starts with a strong, reliable defensive structure and is often heard telling his players to “remember the other team can’t win if they don’t score”. He fully supports youth development within the game and is a keen supporter of Football as a vessel for personal growth, fostering respect and a set of skills that will provide the basis for a successful future both on and off the field.
